When a new wrestler starts participating in what I believe to be the greatest sport in the world one of the things they like to ask is which are the BEST WRESTLING MOVES? That in and of itself is really a trick question, there is no such thing as a best wrestling move or wrestling technique. The answer lies with what is the best wrestling move for you and what is a good wrestling move for the situation you are addressing.

If your go to technique is a Double Leg Takedown, then would it not be for you that is the BEST wrestling move if you are on your feet and you need to score a take down with 30 seconds left in the match? Certainly you wouldn’t think to go to another move you were not comfortable with would you? There are hundreds if not thousands of different techniques in wrestling and for the most part any wrestler will master just a few but hopefully they get decent at a few more.

The more options you have available the better the odds are that you will be able to take advantage of scoring opportunities when you are in a real wrestling match.

While I cannot tell you what the best wrestling moves are here is a list of wrestling techniques I often see taught to beginners, they are broken down by position for ease of browsing.

Wrestling Moves Standing Offense

  • Single Leg Takedown
  • Double Leg Takedonw
  • Head Throw
  • Ankle Pick
  • Duck Under
  • High Crotch

Wrestling Moves Standing Defense

Wrestling Moves Top Position (Referees)

Obviously this is not an all inclusive list of all possible wrestling moves or wrestling holds but this is a good foundation from where to start. Also keep in mind these are actual moves, they in no way reflect the basics of wrestling such as position, stance and set ups for the moves in question. If you want to see more, then read our Basics of Wrestling series to get an idea of all the basic wrestling skills you need to work on in order to be an effective wrestler.

In summary when it comes to finding out what the best wrestling moves are, the answer is within you. This sounds very cliche however it is true. Several moves you will find suitable to your personality, build and expertise, these are the ones that will be best for YOU! It is always a good idea to expand your arsenal but that only comes with practice, so get out there and get busy!
